Will these things swing forward at all or adjust more than just grabbing fixture and twisting? My right mirror ain't worth a damn and I have to drop my head and lean to the left to see my left one. I'm 6'3" if it matters.

I thought the base had a jam nut? I have a habit of breaking things. Is there a trick to loosening the jam nut from the base without stripping everything out?

The base has a jam nut for adjusting under the rubber boot.

To break the jam nut loose you need a 17mm wrench. The jam nut is the one on top that is tapered. Slide your rubber boot up and you will see it.
Also if you are that worried about stripping the jam nut out "cause you tend to break things" I would go to a local auto parts store and buy a 17mm "Line wrench". If you are not familiar with what a line wrench is, it's mainly used on fuel lines to keep from stripping the nuts. The wrench looks like a box end of a regular wrench however it is missing one side so it gets more of a "bite" on the nut your are trying to grab a hold of. The line wrench should fit in the area of the arm of the mirror then would slide down over the jam nut. Just google "line wrench" images and you will understand what i mean.
And "YES" they do swivel front to rear with the nut loosened. In the crate when shipped they are folded all the way in. The rigger/assembler at the dealer most likely "eye balled" when tightening the jam nuts.
Hope this helps.

I have good luck running my mirrors directily above my hand grips on my bikes. I think it looks tidy'er. the mirrors are a little stiff to adjust on the stalks but they dont move either. No the right one doesn't see behind me well but if I drove on the right it would be fine like my left one...
